Are animations obsolete in modern web design?

No of course not !
On the contrary: animations can clarify something so much more than just a narrative with or without a static image. And clever use of transitions and micro-animations can subtly add some style and usability to the overall user experience.

However, the gratuitous use of lengthy "Welcome" animations (just to impress, bore, or even irritate viewers) is absolutely not done anymore.

And beware: tiny innocent animations in the corner of the viewers eye can be very alerting and irritating. Because our instinct is subconsciously aware of little things moving around in the periphery of our view. It might attack us, or even eat us alive...
