I wish they had told me earlier in my design career in applied arts, of the very existence of these principles ! They made me understand why certain design look amateuristic, unhinged, unbalanced, unhelpful, useless...

Applying these principles will help you to create at least a proper design, the basic requirement to get the message across, serving a functional and/or informational purpose. Any artistic twist or value can then be augmented on top of that.
