IMHO it's just another name for any good and essential tuition !

Maybe it's a reaction against the notion that a proper design education should take three or more years, while in most cases you might be spending the same amount of time on learning on the job, starting out with a few good paradigms on design.

However, I don't think design "hacking" involves learning where to find templates. That's not the idea behind creating a new design – it's just copying what's available.
