Was Aldus Freehand better than Adobe Illustrator?

Aldus FreeHand offered many simple features much easier and earlier than Adobe Illustrator. Things like editing anchor points, combining shapes, creating masks, using transformations, setting up styles – all these things were super-easy in FreeHand. And to be honest, after 23 versions since 1987, Illustrator is still making a terrible mess of exactly these things, not making it any easier with each iteration or incarnation its team come up with !

My latest irritation is that Properties panel, which whips up much more than just properties (it also sports actions), and still misses far too many properties and actions when it is supposed to replace those confusingly named Appearance, Infoand Attributes panels, plus the Control bar at the top. (Otherwise it's just another attempt to jump-start novices.)

On the other hand, Illustrator offers far more nifty features and useful gimmicks. Once you're able to see through its historically grown jungle of redundancies and flaws, it's a very powerful and versatile application.
