For desktop publishing, Serif's Affinity software is a fairly good alternative, though it doesn't cover all Adobe's features ! Without taking a mere glance at any sketch or idea, I can safely assure you it can be created and produced with Adobe'ssoftware (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign). But I wouldn't be sure (yet) about Affinity's capabilities...

The enormous complexity and richness of Adobe's sacred threesome is still unrivalled, even in its CS5 carnation of 2010.

Nevertheless, Affinity surely offers a better ease-of-use for beginners, it's also available on iPad, and it's simply for sale (not exclusively available on a subscription basis). So it clearly offers some different features.
