Red, Yellow, Blue are very obvious and popular colors in the sense of aesthetics. If you'd allow a fourth choice, most people would probably add green to the list.

RGB (light) and CMY (inks) are scientifical methods to technically mix three key colors into a wide array of perceived colors.
