Why is everyone but Apple still using JPG for images?

As others have pointed out as well: Apple didn't invent the HEIC. They're just an early adopter. And Adobe is following suit...

It takes time for institutions like the W3C to tinker about accepting and endorsing a new format for web content.

HEIC has many advantages, and can replace a slew of other formats, while finally offering the combination of all much-requested features for e.g. web-imaging: better lossy compression for photos, better lossless compression for other kinds of imagery, transparency in both compression schemes, more bit depth if necessary, and even frame animation ! Sounds like the the GIF is finally on its way out ;-)
