Sketch is obviously more popular among designers who started to work with it a few years ago. They very rightfully turned away from tools like Photoshop and Illustrator, or just never used them at all and already found more than they needed in Sketch.
Those early adopters and routined hard-core users (and maybe one 'ring' of users around them) will remain loyal to Sketch. To them, Adobe XD will always be the wanna-be from a Big Company that always sucked at web and app design.
But what's more important: the pool of web and app designers is rapidly and steadily growing much larger than just that initial core. And that's what Adobe is aiming for, to cater for these greater number of new users.
Adobe really wants to make a come-back with a vengeance...
I already noticed that design students are using XD far more often than Sketch. Corporate users prefer XD because it's also on Windows, and coming from a trusted supplier. Former and more conservative graphic designers who didn't jump on the Sketch bandwagon are surprised that Adobe offers a good alternative. Less technically savvy users who are not into installing plugins from GitHub or other repositories are happy with Adobe centralising and curating plugins for them.
